A security strip is embedded into each library book. When a book is checked out, it must be “desensitized” so that it will not set off the alarm when it leaves or enters the library. When the book is returned, it is “sensitized” so that the alarm will be set off should someone attempt to take the book from the library without going through the proper borrowing procedure.
